Located on a peninsula and separated from downtown Boston by the Charles River, several of our nation's most important historical landmarks call Boston's Charlestown neighborhood home. Charlestown changed its name from Mishawum -- the name given to the area by its native Massachusetts tribe -- and incorporated as a city in 1848. On Jan. 5, 1874, the city of Boston annexed Charlestown and moved its jurisdiction from Middlesex County, which had been the case since 1643, to Suffolk County.
The neighborhood's most notable landmark -- the Bunker Hill Monument -- attracts tourists and locals alike. The Monument commemorates the famous Battle of Bunker Hill, one of the first major battles in the American Revolutionary War. The Bunker Hill Monument also serves as the northernmost destination on the city's Freedom Trail. Another popular Charlestown area attraction -- The Boston Navy Yard -- also brings a steady stream of visitors to the area. Before it closed in 1974, The Boston Navy Yard was one of the oldest operating shipbuilding facilities in the United States. Today, the National Park Service operates the site. The U.S. Navy still maintains its oldest commissioned warship -- the USS Constitution -- at the Boston Navy Yard. Docked alongside the Constitution, a destroyer ship -- the USS Cassin Young -- fought in seven Pacific battles during World War II, survived two Kamikaze hits, and served another full decade beyond her expected lifetime.
Along with the two historical vessels, the museum consists of a dry dock, three piers, 20 buildings (including a gift shop), and a collection of artifacts and navy documents. Opened in 1780 and still operating today, Charlestown's Warren Tavern claims to have been one of Paul Revere's favorite haunts and the place where he began his famous "Midnight Ride." Movie buffs might know the small neighborhood as the location for the 2010 film "The Town" starring Ben Affleck.
